Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova’s song from their indie musical film Once(which won Best Song for its signature “Falling Slowly”) is a hands-down brilliant lament and cry for love from a woman caught between independence and need. Lyrical and melancholy, it captures the complexity of the relationship between a man and a woman, while being simultaneously intensely individualistic.

I first heard Barbra Streisand’s brilliant and beautiful song The Way We Were in her Robert Redford film of the same name. The song captured everything the movie was about, and is epic on it’s own – an achingly melancholy tribute to the passage of time and a love remembered.

Vertical Horizon’s Give You Back, whatever its status as a pop song, is a brilliant and beautiful love song, with lyrics that get to me every time.  It’s about mourning what’s lost and the fragility of time and memories, and the mistakes that we all make. Love it.
